Breast Augmentation Recovery – Top Do’s and Don’ts
The road to breast augmentation recovery may not be as difficult compared to that of other types of surgery, but it can still take weeks and pose a lot of changes and challenges.
Here are some of the important things you have to keep in mind in order to help you have a smooth breast augmentation recovery:
DO follow all your surgeon’s instructions. After the procedure, your surgeon or a member of his or her staff will provide you with a list of general instructions, such as those regarding taking your antibiotics, changing your bandages and the things you should avoid, along with specific instructions, which you should strictly follow. If you have a concern about any of them, make sure you clarify it with your doctor before you leave.
DON’T take a shower for 2 days after your surgery. Once you do take a shower, remove the gauze but leave the surgical tapes on, not covering them. For the first two weeks or until your doctor says otherwise, you should only take showers and not submerge yourself in baths, as relaxing as this may sound.
DO have someone with you for the first few days after your breast augmentation. Not only will you need someone to drive you away since you will still be groggy from the effects of the anesthesia and your prescriptions, but you might feel too tired or sore to move around so you’ll need someone to do the household chores or prepare food for you.
DON’T raise your elbows above your armpit for the first week. This means you should not reach for items on the top shelf and wear clothes that don’t require you lifting your arms, like those with buttons in front.
DO lie on your back when sleeping so you won’t displace the implants or risk opening the wounds.
DON’T engage in sexual intercourse for the first week after the surgery. Even if you are in the mood, being sexually aroused or contact with your breasts can cause them to ache and swell.
DO eat well and drink lots of fluids. On the day of your surgery, you should only have a light diet but afterwards, you should be able to eat full, healthy meals.
DON’t wear a push-up bra for at least six weeks. Keep your surgical bra on for at least a month after the operation.
DO wear a sunscreen when you go out. If you are having your breast augmentation in Florida while on vacation and feel tempted by the fine weather or feel well enough to go out, wear a sunscreen. Also, if you are going to the beach, remember not to expose your breasts to the sun.
DON’T rush your breast augmentation recovery. Take your time and rest when you can. You can go back to work after a week but remember that you have just had a surgery so you should still take it easy and take good care of your body.
